Fierce Competition Makes Seventh North Atlantic Air Gun Competition a Success

Twenty-one air gun shooters from New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Newfoundland and Labrador met this past weekend at Memorial University's Frank Zahn High Performance Marksmanship Facility to determine who would be the 2015 North Atlantic Air Gun Champion in men's and women's Olympic style air rifle and air pistol. After two qualifying rounds, the top shooters moved on to the finals event Sunday afternoon where the competition for top honours was fierce with some final standings separated by a single point or less.

In Women's Air Rifle, current Canadian Champion Emily Dean from New Brunswick fought off a strong field of contenders to take first place. Close behind Ms. Dean was her teammate Rachael Mundie with Newfoundland and Labrador's Samantha Marsh claiming third.

In Women's Air Pistol, Newfoundland and Labrador's Canada Winter Games medalists Margaret Coady and Emily Keeping took first and second place respectively while Teresa MacDonald of Nova Scotia placed third.

In Men's Air Rifle, Ben Taylor of Newfoundland and Labrador, current Canadian Champion, held on to first place despite a hotly-contested finals with Daniel Dimitrov and David Woolridge, both of St. John's, taking second and third respectively. Competing in his first air rifle finals, Daniel Blackmore of St. John�s, claimed first in the Sub-Junior class. Para-Athlete Dean Chaulk also of St. John�s, also shooting his first finals, took the SH1 Air Rifle Championship.

In Men's Air Pistol, Scott Ring of New Brunswick claimed first place followed by son and father competitors Martin and Mario Dimitrov of Newfoundland and Labrador, who took second and third respectively.

The Newfoundland and Labrador Shooting Association is the provincial shooting sports governing body affiliated with the Shooting Federation of Canada. The SFC is the national sports governing body for target shooting sports in Canada and is responsible for the selection of shooters who attend international shooting events such as the Pan Am / Para Pan Am Games and Olympic / Paralympic Games.
