Demonstrating a Commitment to Inclusion

Province Seeks Proposals for Accessible Taxi Services

The Provincial Government is seeking funding proposals from individuals or businesses interested in participating in an Accessible Taxi Pilot Project, which requires the proponent to provide appropriate vehicle(s) and dispatch service to serve the needs of persons with disabilities and individuals requiring accessible taxi services.

As a government, we are committed to enhancing the inclusion of persons with disabilities in all aspects of society. Accessible transportation is essential for people to be able to travel within their own communities and throughout the province. Whether for education, work, health care or leisure, transportation can be the key to participation.
- The Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Seniors, Wellness and Social Development

In 2012, the Provincial Government released Access. Inclusion. Equality., A Strategy for the Inclusion of Persons with Disabilities. One of the main goals of the strategy is to increase accessible and affordable transportation options throughout the province. Through the Accessible Taxi Pilot Project, up to three grants will be provided to individuals, companies or agencies that are able to deliver taxi services that are accessible for individuals using mobility devices such as wheelchairs.

The proponents will be selected based on who can best demonstrate local demand for accessible taxi services, along with their ability to provide such a service. This must include access to a taxi license.

The deadline to submit proposals is Friday, February 27. For more information on the Accessible Taxi Pilot Project and request for proposals, visit: //www.swsd.gov.nl.ca/disabilities/accessible_taxi_program.html.
