Protecting Against Fraud

Minister Recognizes Check Registration Day

Today is Check Registration Day, an annual event created by the Canadian Securities Administrators to increase consumer awareness about investment fraud during Fraud Prevention Month.

The Consumer and Commercial Affairs Branch of Service NL is dedicated to protecting the people of our province from all types of fraud, and makes information and resources available to help people stay informed. On Check Registration Day, I encourage everyone to visit Service NLs website, as well as the Canadian Securities Administrators website, where they will find a list of all currently licensed or registered financial service providers, and other useful information.
- The Honourable Dan Crummell, Minister of Service NL

It is important to note that Service NL, in partnership with the other Canadian Securities Administrators, will only register firms and individuals that meet specific qualifications and standards. Checking for that registration is important, because it helps confirm if people or companies are authorized to sell investments or offer investment advice. To quickly check securities registrations, people can use the National Registration Search engine at www.aretheyregistered.com External link, or contact the Financial Services Regulation Division of Service NL at 709-729-2602.

Alternatively, consumers can visit any of the following websites, which are also aimed at promoting fraud prevention:

QUICK FACTS

  • March is National Fraud Prevention Month, which raises awareness of the dangers of all types of fraud.
  • Those seeking information about existing and emerging forms of fraud are encouraged to call the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501.
  • Members of the public who believe they may be victims of fraud are urged to contact Service NL, the RCMP, or the RNC.
