Protecting Families and Communities from Identity Theft

Safeguarding Consumers from Identity Theft

With March being Fraud Prevention Month, consumers should take the opportunity to learn about the different types of fraud and the dangers that can result from identity theft.

"Identity theft occurs when someone uses your personal information without your knowledge or consent to commit a crime. Once they steal the information, identity thieves can manipulate it and invade your personal and financial life. With March designated as Fraud Prevention Month, consumers should keep in mind these four tips - guard your personal information, keep your computer and smartphone and its contents safe, shop and bank safely online, and be vigilant."
- The Honourable Tony Cornect, Minister of Service NL

Anyone who suspects they are a victim of identity theft should contact their local police department and look out for the following signs:

  • Bills and statements not arriving when they are supposed to, or credit card statements arriving for unknown accounts;
  • Collection agencies or creditors calling for unknown accounts;
  • Financial account statements showing unknown withdrawals or transfers;
  • Creditors calling to approve or deny credit not applied for; and
  • Credit being turned down for unknown reasons.

The Consumer Affairs division in Service NL helps to protect the interests of consumers and their rights and is linked with organizations that help individuals make informed selections in the marketplace. Consumers can also consult the Canadian Consumer Handbook at www.consumerhandbook.ca .
