Knowledge Provides the Best Protection Against Fraud

In order to raise awareness about the various types and dangers of fraud, and to equip residents with the knowledge to safeguard against it; March is recognized as Fraud Prevention Month in Canada.

�There are many types of fraud ranging from investment and securities fraud to identity theft as a result of credit card fraud. Being the victim of any type of fraud can have devastating and long-lasting effects. The best defense of against fraud is knowledge and vigilance � know how to spot the warning signs and report all forms of fraud to policing agencies, the Canadian Securities Administrators, the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre, or the Financial Services Regulation Division of Service NL.�

Service NL suggests the following fraud-prevention tips to consumers:

  • Check valid licences/registrations of individuals and companies that sell real estate, insurance, prepaid funerals and mortgage brokering services in this province at www.servicenl.gov.nl.ca;
  • Check the registration of individuals and companies that sell securities at the National Registration Search at www.aretheyregistered.ca ; and
  • Contact Service NL at 709-729-2596 for any additional questions with respect to individuals and companies selling securities, real estate, insurance, prepaid funerals and mortgage brokering services in this province.
