Regulatory Reform Supports a Vibrant Economy

The Provincial Government Continues to Achieve Success in Reducing Regulatory Burden

The Provincial Government continues to make significant progress in reducing the regulatory burden on Newfoundlanders and Labradorians and supporting innovation across many business sectors.

"Over the years, our government has effectively reduced red tape which benefits our citizens and businesses. Our Regulatory Reform Initiative has been successful and effective as we have maintained our zero per cent net growth target for new regulations since 2009 and have achieved reductions in the last four consecutive quarters. It is unfortunate the Canadian Federation of Independent Business fails to recognize this significant progress and our achievements in enhanced reporting for regulatory reform."
- The Honourable Tony Cornect, Minister of Service NL

This year, in its annual report card, Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB) downgraded Newfoundland and Labrador's Regulatory Reform Initiative to a C (ranked sixth among Canadian jurisdictions) from a C+ in the previous year. The CFIB has not offered a rationale for the decrease, instead acknowledging that the province's first annual public regulatory reform, released in November 2014, is an important step in the right direction. Moreover, the CFIB does not consider the actual progress in reducing the regulatory count.

"The Provincial Government remains committed to regulatory reform. Since 2006, our efforts to measure, reduce and report on regulatory reform have been unprecedented and have resulted in reducing approximately 80,000 requirements. We have achieved improvements to government services, and our accountability framework carefully considers the need for all new regulation and what the impact will be on Newfoundlanders and Labradorians."
- Minister Cornect

The CFIB has proclaimed January 19-23 as its annual Red Tape Awareness Week. This week recognizes the importance of reducing red tape for small business owners and the Provincial Government has consistently supported this initiative.
