Public Advisory: The 12 Days of Fire Safety Day 10

Smoke alarms save lives, but only when correctly installed and properly maintained.

You can reduce your familys risk of being injured or killed in a home fire simply by having the right number of smoke alarms installed in the appropriate areas of your home, and keeping them all in good working order.

Installing Smoke Alarms
If possible, use inter-connected smoke alarms so that if one smoke alarm inside your home is triggered, they all activate.

Use a visual smoke alarm featuring lights or vibrations to alert anyone who has trouble hearing.

Install smoke alarms in the following areas:

  • On every level of your home, including the basement;
  • In every bedroom; and
  • In the hallway or room outside of every bedroom or separate sleeping area.

Maintaining Smoke Alarms

  • Test your smoke alarm once per month to ensure it is working properly;
  • Replace the batteries as often as indicated by the smoke alarm manufacturer. A good rule of thumb is to replace them every six months when the clocks change; and
  • Replace smoke alarms when they are 10 years old.

All residents of the province are invited to visit @FES_GovNL on Twitter during the 12 Days of Fire Safety to complete our fire safety quiz for the chance to win an emergency preparedness kit.
