Public Advisory: The 12 Days of Fire Safety Day 9

Fire extinguishers are a great way to quickly put out small fires before they become larger and more destructive.

However, individuals must understand when it is advisable to use a fire extinguisher and how to use them safely and effectively.

Choosing a Fire Extinguisher

  • Only purchase a fire extinguisher that is approved by a nationally-recognized testing laboratory, such as Underwriters Laboratories of Canada (ULC);
  • Choose a multi-purpose fire extinguisher that is able to extinguish common types of home fires. A class rating of ABC means the fire extinguisher can fight wood, liquid/gas, and electrical fires;
  • Choose a fire extinguisher that can be comfortably held and operated by all adults in your home;
  • Thoroughly read the instructions for the use of your fire extinguisher and ensure all adults in the home know how to use it;
  • Arrange to have your fire extinguisher inspected and serviced annually; and
  • Mount your fire extinguisher on a wall near an escape route. Never install one adjacent to a potential fire hazard.

When to Use a Fire Extinguisher

  • Only use a fire extinguisher when a small fire is confined to a small area, such as a pot or wastebasket;
  • Only use a fire extinguisher after everyone else has evacuated the home and 911 has been called;
  • Never use a fire extinguisher in a room that is already filled with smoke; and
  • Always remember fire extinguishers are a secondary element of your fire safety plan. Your first priority is always to get everyone out of the building safely.

Learn How to PASS

  • PULL the pin to activate the fire extinguisher;
  • AIM the nozzle at the base of the fire;
  • SQUEEZE the handle; and
  • SWEEP from side-to-side at the base of the fire while discharging the contents of the fire extinguisher.

All residents of the province are invited to visit @FES_GovNL on Twitter during the 12 Days of Fire Safety to complete our fire safety quiz for the chance to win an emergency preparedness kit.
