Corner Brook Celebrates Grand Opening of New Water Treatment Plant

The Honourable Keith Hutchings, Minister of Municipal and Intergovernmental Affairs, and the Honourable Rob Moore, Regional Minister for Newfoundland and Labrador and Minister of State (Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency), on behalf of the Honourable Denis Lebel, Minister of Infrastructure, Communities and Intergovernmental Affairs and Minister of the Economic Development Agency of Canada for the Regions of Quebec, along with Charles Pender, Mayor of Corner Brook, announced the completion of the Corner Brook Water Treatment Plant today.

"The Provincial Government's investment of $12 million in this project will bring enhanced water quality to the residents of the City of Corner Brook and the residents of the adjacent communities of Massey Drive and Mount Moriah. I am pleased to say that through the city working with departmental officials, a design-build process was utilized which saved approximately $15 million on the overall project cost. It is important that we continue to be innovative in our approaches to ensure we are maximizing funding dollars. I applaud the city for following this approach."
- The Honourable Keith Hutchings, Minister of Municipal and Intergovernmental Affairs

The approximately $50 million project involved constructing a new water treatment plant, and installing new water transmission and sewer infrastructure to carry residual material from the new treatment plant to the existing sewer system. Work also included building two above-ground storage reservoirs next to the plant to ensure stable water supplies are available to the communities.

"Our government is pleased to have invested in the construction of Corner Brook's new water treatment plant. Modern and effective water treatment is essential to ensuring the health and well-being of our communities and to safeguarding our waterways. This project will help protect the environment and enhance the quality of life for the people of Newfoundland and Labrador."
-The Honourable Rob Moore, Regional Minister for Newfoundland and Labrador and Minister of State (Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency)

Thanks to this important infrastructure investment, the federal, provincial and municipal governments have helped ensure residents of Corner Brook and the surrounding areas have access to high-quality water treatment services and are well protected against fire and other emergencies.

"I am pleased to see the completion of the Corner Brook Water Treatment Plant. This new facility will directly benefit the health and well-being of residents and businesses in Corner Brook and the adjacent communities of Massey Drive and Mount Moriah. I would also like to thank council members for their efforts in helping make this significant project a reality."
-The Honourable Vaughn Granter, Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture and MHA for Humber West

The new plant is compliant with the Canadian Drinking Water Quality Guidelines and designed to produce a flow rate of up to 30 million litres per day.

"Improving water quality has been a priority of the City of Corner Brook for decades. Providing clean, safe drinking water is essential for any municipality and provides a great comfort level for residents. We are extremely pleased and excited that this project has finally become a reality. Establishment of a water treatment plant has been a longstanding commitment of the current city council and former councils. Many thanks to everyone including current and former staff who dedicated countless hours and made a significant contribution to the realization of this project. We also appreciate the cooperation and support of the federal and provincial governments for providing funding and expertise."
-Charles Pender, Mayor of Corner Brook

The plant uses ultraviolet and chlorine treatment combined with a Dissolved Air Flotation process that helps eliminate waterborne diseases in the water supply.
