The Honourable Darin King, Minister of Justice and Public Safety and the Honourable Felix Collins, Attorney General are expressing condolences on the recent passing of former Supreme Court Chief Justice of Newfoundland and Labrador James Gushue. Justice Gushue passed away on October 25.
"Justice Gushue served with Supreme Court for 26 years and over that time he presided over some of the most important cases in the province. He was well-respected and looked at as a mentor for many lawyers and judges until his retirement in 2002. I offer my condolences to his family during this difficult time."
- The Honourable Darin King, Minister of Justice and Public Safety
Justice Gushue was born and raised in St. John's. He was named a Rhodes Scholar in 1956 and attended the University College, Oxford where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Jurisprudence. He served as Chief Justice for the province from 1996-1999 and retired from the bench in 2002.
"Any time a person with the experience and stature of Justice Gushue passes, it is a significant loss to the legal community in Newfoundland and Labrador. He presided in a firm and fair manner and his decisions had an important impact on the administration of justice in the province. He will be sorely missed and I hope his family can find solace by reflecting on his considerable achievements."
- The Honourable Felix Collins, Attorney General
