Associate Chief Judge Appointed for Provincial Court

The Honourable Darin King, Minister of Justice and Public Safety, and the Honourable Felix Collins, Attorney General, today announced that Judge Michael A. Madden has been appointed as Associate Chief Judge with the Provincial Court of Newfoundland and Labrador. Judge Madden's appointment is effective as of today (October 8, 2015).

The Associate Chief Judge performs the duties assigned to him or her by the Chief Judge. If the Chief Judge is unable to perform his or her duties due to illness or some other reason, or where the position of Chief Judge is vacant, the Associate Chief Judge will perform those duties. Judge Madden has a legal career spanning nearly 30 years including spending more than five years as a Provincial Court Judge.

BACKGROUNDER
Biography - Michael A. Madden

Michael A. Madden is a native of St. John's and graduated from Memorial University in 1981 with a Bachelor of Arts (honours) and a Bachelor of Laws from Dalhousie University in 1985. He was called to the Newfoundland and Labrador bar in 1986 and practised with the firm Fowler Rose, subsequently Fowler Pike and Madden, until joining Mercer Orsborn Benson Myles. In 1992 he joined the federal Department of Justice in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and in 2001 returned to St. John's upon the opening of the Public Prosecution Service of Canada, where he held the position of Senior Counsel. Judge Madden has appeared at all levels of court and is a former member of the National Wiretap Committee and a presenter for the Joint Committee on Continuing Legal Education in St. John's. He was appointed to the bench as a Provincial Court Judge in February 2010.
