Enhancing Community Safety and Security
Minister Announces New Pumper for Southern Harbour
The Provincial Government today announced funding toward the purchase of a $270,000 fire truck for the Town of Southern Harbour. The Honourable Darin King, Minister of Justice and Public Safety and Minister Responsible for Fire and Emergency Services-Newfoundland and Labrador, made the announcement in Southern Harbour with Calvin Peach, MHA for Bellevue.
"The safety and security of communities in Newfoundland and Labrador is a priority for the Provincial Government. Providing funding to help communities purchase the modern firefighting vehicles they need is an essential part of that commitment. This funding will enable the Town of Southern Harbour to enhance fire safety in the municipality and surrounding area."
- The Honourable Darin King, Minister of Justice and Public Safety and Minister Responsible for Fire and Emergency Services-Newfoundland and Labrador
Funding for the vehicle is being provided on a 90/10 cost-shared basis with the Provincial Government providing the larger portion and the town providing the remainder. The four-door pumper seats five firefighters, has a six-cylinder diesel engine, and features a 1,000-gallon tank and foam capacity.
"I am very pleased with this investment by the Provincial Government in the Southern Harbour Volunteer Fire Department. Firefighters in the Bellevue area play a critical role in protecting our communities and responding to incidents along our province's highways."
- Calvin Peach, MHA for Bellevue
This investment is part of over $5 million included in Budget 2015 for fire protection vehicles and equipment, matching the largest-ever amount allocated to fire and emergency services in the previous year's budget.
"This new equipment will certainly support the many volunteers who provide fire protection and emergency response to local residents. I applaud the Southern Harbour Volunteer Fire Department for their work in making our town a safer place to live and work."
- Joe Brewer, Mayor of Southern Harbour
From Budget 2004 to the end of 2014-15, the Provincial Government has contributed more than $21 million toward the purchase of new fire protection vehicles.
