Public Advisory: Adverse Weather Conditions Anticipated Throughout Newfoundland and Labrador

Fire and Emergency Services-Newfoundland and Labrador (FES-NL) encourages residents to be cautious around coastlines and waterways over the next 24 to 36 hours as there is potential for elevated water levels due to large waves and pounding surf associated with a weather system affecting the province today, tonight and into tomorrow.

According to Environment Canada, the weather system is forecasted to bring strong northwesterly winds for the northeast coast and the north and east coasts of the Avalon Peninsula. The winds are forecast to exceed 100 kilometres per hour this afternoon, especially in exposed areas of these regions.

Coastal areas from Notre Dame Bay to of St. Johns can expect high waves, pounding surf, and elevated water levels during this evenings high tide. Low lying coastal areas exposed to the north and northwest will be the most vulnerable. Similar conditions are forecasted for Thursday mornings high tide for areas between Bonavista Bay and Cape Race. Low lying coastal areas exposed to the north and northeast will be the most vulnerable. This may cause minor coastal flooding, beach erosion and infrastructure damage.

Municipalities and local service districts should ensure infrastructure such as roads, ditches and drains are clear of debris and that appropriate provisions are made for the delivery of services in the event adverse weather has a greater impact than anticipated.

Residents should be mindful of these conditions and avoid coastal areas if at all possible. Conditions may be extremely hazardous and emergency management officials advise the public to use extreme caution.

The public is reminded to follow the latest weather forecast for further alert bulletins and to take measures to ensure personal safety.
