Public Advisory: Be Firework Smart this Canada Day

Fire and Emergency Services Newfoundland and Labrador (FES-NL) is reminding residents to be responsible when lighting or handling fireworks during Canada Day celebrations.

Many Newfoundlanders and Labradorians celebrate the Canada Day holiday with fireworks. To protect people and property, follow these safety tips:

  • Only use fireworks outdoors in a clear, open area where their use is not prohibited;
  • Monitor wind strength and direction to ensure fireworks do not impact buildings, vehicles, overhead obstructions, or dry brush/grass;
  • Ensure all spectators, especially children, are at least 20 metres away from the fireworks;
  • Wear eye protection and non-flammable clothing when lighting fireworks;
  • Handle fireworks with caution and never let children play with or light them;
  • Always have water ready if you are using fireworks;
  • Wait 30 minutes before attempting to pick up misfired (dud) fireworks and soak them in water with spent fireworks; and
  • Dispose of soaked fireworks in an outdoor, fire-resistant garbage can away from buildings and flammable materials.
