U-Turn Drop-In Centre Receives Funding to Strengthen Support Services

The Provincial Government is investing $70,000 in the U-Turn Drop-in Centre in Carbonear to support the hiring of an executive director and the operation of the centre.

"We know how critical it is to ensure that programs and services are in place when people are dealing with the devastating impact of addiction. We recognize the role that U-Turn and its dedicated volunteers play in extending compassion and support to individuals in recovery and their families. Through the U-Turn Drop-in Centre, residents of Carbonear and the surrounding region can access services that help them toward achieving healthy, balanced lifestyles."
- The Honourable Steve Kent, Deputy Premier and Minister of Health and Community Services

The U-Turn Drop-In Centre provides direct, on-site support and counselling to individuals age 18 years and older and families recovering from addictions. The centre receives approximately 3,500 client visits annually and services include:

  • Support for clients and families in recovery, including addiction education, healthy lifestyle awareness, life skills and relapse prevention;
  • 12-step addiction group meetings, including family group meetings;
  • Referrals to mental health and addictions professionals at Eastern Health and at community-based organizations; and
  • Assistance with travel costs for individuals to attend the Recovery Centre or the Opioid Treatment Centre.

"The U-Turn Drop-in Centre provides support and resources for people seeking help with their addiction and recovery. This investment will build on our ability to help individuals and families to find hope, encouragement and support on the road to recovery."
- Jeffrey Bourne, ex-officio Board Member, U-Turn Drop-In Centre

In addition to this investment of $70,000, the Provincial Government provides the U-Turn Drop-In Centre with an annual operating grant of over $30,000 through the Support to Community Agencies Grant Funding Program.

Every year, the Provincial Government invests approximately $100 million for mental health and addictions programs and services in Newfoundland and Labrador.
