Investing in Health Care for Communities and Families

Provincial Government Provides $18 Million in Health Care Funding for Eastern Region

Health care services in the eastern region of the province will be strengthened through a total Provincial Government investment of approximately $18 million. A detailed summary of the distribution of this funding can be found in the attached backgrounder.

The Health Sciences Centre will benefit from an investment of approximately $7.3 million for new equipment and upgrades. An additional $3 million will assist with the purchase of furnishings and equipment for the new Molecular Imaging Facility at the Health Sciences Complex.

The Janeway Children’s Health and Rehabilitation Centre will receive more than $600,000 in funding for women and children’s health. Close to $1.4 million will be provided for the purchase of new equipment at St. Clare’s Mercy Hospital and approximately $1 million will be used for upgrades and new equipment at the Dr. Leonard A. Miller Centre. Close to $3 million will be provided for various infrastructure upgrades and equipment purchases at the Waterford Hospital.

Through an investment of $150,000, the Provincial Government will support the purchase of dialysis chairs across the eastern region in collaboration with the Health Care Foundation.

The Dr. H. Bliss Murphy Cancer Centre will receive over $2.2 million for new cancer care equipment and expansion of use of the ARIA Medical Oncology Information Management System.

Cancer remains the leading cause of death in Canada. Budget 2015 includes a total of $133.7 million to ensure access to new and modern health care facilities and equipment for Newfoundlanders and Labradorians, including $40 million for new health care equipment and $20 million for repair and renovation projects.

BACKGROUNDER
2015 Health Care Investments for Eastern Region

Health Sciences Centre:

An investment of approximately $7.3 million will be provided for the purchase of new equipment and upgrades at the Health Sciences Centre. This includes:

  • Pacemakers, specialized beds, defibrillators and monitors for cardiac critical care;
  • A portable ultrasound machine for emergency services;
  • Centrifuges, freezers, incubators and microscopes to support laboratory services;
  • Ventilators;
  • An automated medication distribution system;
  • Continued upgrades to the facility’s heating, ventilation and air conditioning system;
  • Upgrades to the existing autopsy suite; and
  • Continued fire safety improvements to the overall facility.
  • An additional $3 million will assist with the purchase of furnishings and equipment for the new Molecular Imaging Facility at the Health Sciences Complex. Once complete, the facility will support the consolidation of Eastern Health’s nuclear medicine services in one location. It will also house the province’s first PET/CT scanner and medical cyclotron, enhancing the treatment and diagnosis of cancers and other illnesses.

    Janeway Children’s Health and Rehabilitation Centre

    The Janeway Children’s Health and Rehabilitation Centre will receive more than $600,000 for women and children’s health. This includes:

  • Fetal monitors;
  • An echocardiograph machine;
  • A ventilator;
  • An operating table;
  • Replacement stretchers; and
  • Upgrades to the psychiatric unit’s patient washrooms.
  • St. Clare’s Mercy Hospital

    Close to $1.4 million will be provided for the purchase of new equipment at St. Clare’s Mercy Hospital. This includes:

  • New patient beds;
  • Replacement stretchers;
  • Pacemakers and infusion pumps;
  • Operating tables;
  • Ventilators;
  • Additional home dialysis units that support home-based therapies; and
  • A new portable ultrasound machine.
  • Dr. Leonard A. Miller Centre

    The Dr. Leonard A. Miller Centre will receive approximately $1 million for equipment and upgrades, including:

  • New patient beds;
  • Replacement stretchers; and
  • Upgrades to the heating, ventilation and air conditioning unit that services the north side of the facility.
  • Waterford Hospital

    Close to $3 million will be provided for various infrastructure upgrades and equipment purchases at the Waterford Hospital. This includes:

  • New electric beds;
  • An automated medication distribution system; and
  • Replacement of portable dialysis water systems.
  • Dr. H. Bliss Murphy Cancer Care Foundation

    The Dr. H. Bliss Murphy Cancer Centre will receive over $2.2 million to support equipment purchases and upgrades. This includes:

  • Replacement of a linear accelerator used to treat cancer with external beam radiation; and
  • Expansion of the ARIA Medical Oncology Information Management System – a comprehensive system that combines radiation, medical and surgical oncology into a complete electronic record to manage patient care.

  • Through an investment of $150,000, the Provincial Government will support the purchase of dialysis chairs across the eastern region in collaboration with the Health Care Foundation.
