Event Recognizes Significant Redevelopment of Operating Suites in St. John's

An event was held today to officially recognize the redevelopment of two operating suites in the St. John's region. The upgrades create a safer and more effective surgical environment and represent a total Provincial Government investment of approximately $700,000. The redevelopment is the result of a funding partnership between the Provincial Government, the Resource Development Trades Council (RDTC) and the Newfoundland and Labrador Building Trades Council (NLBTC).

"The Provincial Government greatly values the significant contribution made by the RDTC to this initiative. By allowing health care professionals to work in a more open and well-equipped environment with state-of-the-art tools and technology, we can deliver an enhanced level of care to patients in a way that is safer and more efficient for all."
- The Honourable Steve Kent, Deputy Premier and Minister of Health and Community Services

The operating suites have been renovated and re-equipped based on best practices in surgical medicine and feature leading-edge technology. The redeveloped rooms are designed to improve ergonomics, decrease clutter, ease personnel movement, maintain the sterile field and allow the use of multiple operating room technologies and video signals. One suite is located at the Health Sciences Centre and the other is located at St. Clare's Mercy Hospital.

"The kind of support and generosity expressed by the Building Trades Workers of the RDTC is unprecedented and truly inspiring. As a result of the RDTC's multimillion dollar commitment and significant support from the Provincial Government, these upgrades make a direct and significant difference in the lives of thousands of patients in our province."
- Debbie Patten, Chair, Board of Directors, Health Care Foundation

Since 2004, the Provincial Government has invested nearly $1.5 billion in health care infrastructure. Budget 2014: Shared Prosperity, Fair Society, Balanced Outlook includes a total investment of over $189 million in infrastructure, which allocates $119 million for continuing construction and redevelopment, $50.5 million for new equipment and $20 million for repairs and renovations.
