Public Advisory: Wolf Sightings in Labrador West

The Forestry and Agrifoods Agency is warning residents about wolf sightings in the area of Labrador City and Wabush. Recent sightings have been confirmed by conservation officers with the agency.

Wolves have been known to occasionally attack small to medium-sized pets. Pet owners, especially those living adjacent to wooded areas, are advised to protect their animals by:

  • Keeping them indoors or in confined areas such as a fenced yard;
  • Limiting the amount of time pets spend outside, especially after dark; and
  • Supervising pets at all times while outside.

Conservation officers have increased patrols in the area and will continue to monitor the situation.

Should you encounter a wolf:

  • Stay calm;
  • Give the animal space;
  • Back away slowly - never run; and
  • Avoid direct eye contact with the animal.

Anyone sighting a wolf should contact the local Forestry and Agrifoods Agency 24-hour on-call number at 709-280-3747 or the Labrador West Royal Newfoundland Constabulary at 709-944-7602.
