Taking a Strategic Approach to Climate Change

Provincial Government Releases Climate Change Progress Update and Electric Vehicle Report

The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador today released the fourth annual progress update as committed to in the 2011 Climate Change and Energy Efficiency Action Plans. The Action Plans establish the Provincial Government's strategic approach for adapting to the impacts of climate change, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and generating a major shift in the uptake of energy efficiency. More than half of the 75 commitments under the plans have been completed.

"Climate change is one of the greatest challenges facing the planet. Addressing it, and increasing energy efficiency requires sustained and strategic action, and I am pleased to report today work has been undertaken on all 75 commitments in the plans and more than half have been completed."
- The Honourable Dan Crummell, Minister Responsible for the Office of Climate Change and Energy Efficiency

The progress report is available online at: www.exec.gov.nl.ca/exec/ccee/publications/pr_update_ccee_ap_oct2015.pdf

In addition, as part of its commitment to advance action to tackle climate change and engage the public on this important issue, the Provincial Government today released a report that examines electric vehicle technology, infrastructure requirements and market developments. It is available online at: www.exec.gov.nl.ca/exec/ccee/publications/electric_veh_report.pdf

"This comprehensive report examines the growing interest in electric vehicles, technological developments, infrastructure requirements, policies and measures in place in other jurisdictions, and the current state of the market in our province. As a government, we want to ensure that Newfoundlanders and Labradorians are given the information they need on this important topic. With 98 per cent of our province's electricity planned to be coming from clean renewable sources by 2018, electric vehicles present an opportunity to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and tackle climate change"
- Minister Crummell

As of December 2014, 34 battery electric vehicles, including passenger and courier vehicles, and 239 hybrid and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles combined, have been registered in the province. There are approximately 47 electric vehicle charging stations in various areas of the province, including: Channel-Port aux Basques, Clarenville, Deer Lake, Gander, Grand Falls-Windsor, Marystown, Mount Pearl, Paradise, St. John's and Stephenville.
