Supporting Students and Communities

Newly Redeveloped Corner Brook Intermediate Prepares for Students

Corner Brook Intermediate will open its doors to students this week after the completion of a $16 million redevelopment and extension project. The school can accommodate over 750 students upon its opening.

"Our government continues to demonstrate that an investment in education is a direct investment in students, communities and Newfoundland and Labrador. Schools like Corner Brook Intermediate are essential to population growth, strengthening communities and ensuring future generations have the building blocks to become the leaders of tomorrow. I wish the students attending this school all the best in their studies and in building a new school culture and identity."
- The Honourable Paul Davis, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador

The renovation project saw the former Regina High School redeveloped and extended. A new gym was constructed; existing space was reconfigured to include a new fitness centre, multipurpose/lunch room and kitchen; upgrades were made to the library/resource centre, home economics lab, art room, computer lab, science labs, and applied technology lab; windows were replaced and a new main entrance developed; and upgrades were completed to mechanical and electrical systems, including energy efficient lighting.

"Schools are a critical component in the development of our youth. These are places where they form lifelong friendships, gain skills and knowledge and continue their journey into adulthood. While these buildings provide the environment for learning, it is the teachers and students who truly make a school a community. Good luck to all students attending Corner Brook Intermediate."
- The Honourable Susan Sullivan, Minister of Education and Early Childhood Development

Corner Brook Intermediate will accommodate all junior high students in Grades 7 to 9 in Corner Brook that previously attended the former G.C. Rowe Junior High and Presentation Junior High.

"The redevelopment of Corner Brook Intermediate provides students a modern learning environment. This project is a great example of our government's strong commitment to upgrading educational infrastructure province-wide. This school will continue to be a focal point for the community and will now continue to foster high-quality education for our students for many years to come. I am pleased to see this initiative finalized and students now beginning to benefit from the work."
- The Honourable David Brazil, Minister of Transportation and Works

This project is another step in the reorganization of schools in Corner Brook. This process involved the redevelopment of the former Herdman Collegiate into Corner Brook Regional High and will include future projects at G.C. Rowe Junior High, J.J. Curling Elementary and a long-term plan for C.C. Loughlin Elementary.

"It is very exciting to see Corner Brook Intermediate open to students. As a former teacher and administrator I can certainly appreciate the value of attending and teaching in a modern school like this one. This is an important investment in this region. I encourage all students to make the best use of their time while in school. You have the opportunity, tools and resources at your disposal to be and do whatever you want."
- The Honourable Vaughn Granter, Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture and MHA for Humber West

To support the multi-year education infrastructure development plan, over $95 million is allocated through Budget 2015 for K-12 infrastructure.

"The opening of Corner Brook Intermediate is a significant milestone for the school system of the area, particularly for the junior high community. I welcome all students and staff to this modern school which I am confident will lead not only to academic success, but also to the personal growth of all students and a school culture of confidence and respect."
- Milton Peach, Chair, Newfoundland and Labrador English School Board

Since 2004, 14 new schools have been opened; 11 more are in various stages of planning or construction; 30 major extension and renovation projects have been completed, with 10 more underway; and approximately 1,930 repairs and maintenance projects have been approved.
