Honouring Our Veterans and Heritage

Provincial Government Launches New Veterans Licence Plates

A new provincial licence plate for veterans was officially unveiled today at the Royal Canadian Legion War Memorial in Logy Bay-Middle Cove-Outer Cove. The Honourable Paul Davis, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, presented the first of these new licence plates to Frank Sullivan, a veteran and First Vice-President of the Newfoundland and Labrador Provincial Command of the Royal Canadian Legion. They were joined by the Honourable Dan Crummell, Minister of Service NL, and Provincial Command President Comrade Ross Petten.

“This important update to our veterans licence plate program adds the Royal Canadian Legion’s official ‘Red Poppy’ to the design – a timely addition given the Honour 100 commemorations taking place throughout this year to recognize our province’s significant role in the First World War. On behalf of the Provincial Government, I thank all veterans for their valuable contributions.”
- The Honourable Paul Davis, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador

The Royal Canadian Legion manages the application process for veterans plates, and the plates are provided by the Department of Service NL at no initial cost. The plates can be issued for use on passenger vehicles and commercial vehicles less than 4,500 kilograms. Once obtained, the standard annual fees for vehicle registrations apply.

“Through close collaboration between the Provincial Government and the Provincial Command of the Royal Canadian Legion, we have developed a new licence design that will bring greater attention to provincial veterans who have protected our country’s interests throughout the world. I commend everyone for their work on this initiative, and look forward to distributing these new plates to veterans.”
- The Honourable Dan Crummell, Minister of Service NL

The Poppy and Remembrance Committee of the Dominion Command of the Royal Canadian Legion officially granted the right to use the official “Red Poppy” logo in March of this year. This created the opportunity to make the first design update to the provincial veterans licence plate since it was first introduced in 2003. Since that time, Service NL has issued more than 1,500 plates.

“The Royal Canadian Legion was proud to partner with the Provincial Government on this great initiative, which not only honours the service of the veteran who owns the licence plate, but also recognizes the rich history of military service provided by Newfoundlanders and Labradorians. We appreciate the Provincial Government’s commitment to this project, and other initiatives aimed at recognizing those who have given military service to our province and our country, as well as those who continue to do so today.”
- Frank Sullivan, First Vice-President of the Newfoundland and Labrador Provincial Command, Royal Canadian Legion
