Public Sector Employees Benefit from Successful Negotiations

Government Reaches Agreement in Principle with Teachers' Association to Secure Pension Plan

The Provincial Government and the Newfoundland and Labrador Teachers’ Association (NLTA) have reached an agreement in principle that sustains the Teachers’ Pension Plan. The Honourable Paul Davis, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, announced the conclusion of an agreement today at the NLTA's Biennial Meeting in St. John’s.

“Teachers in our province dedicate themselves to educating and nurturing our children and their enthusiasm and professionalism should be commended. Through this agreement, we are helping to ensure that once our teachers retire they have access to a sustainable pension fund. This government has worked hard to secure our pension plans so that all public service employees, including teachers, can feel confident in their future. I want to thank NLTA President Jim Dinn and the NLTA negotiating team for their dedication throughout the negotiating process.”
- The Honourable Paul Davis, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador

The agreement in principle ensures the sustainability of the Teachers' Pension Plan and provides for a joint trusteeship for the future.

“This is a historic agreement that provides stability to sustain the teachers’ pension plan. The Premier and Minister of Finance were instrumental in achieving the agreement.”
- James Dinn, President of the Newfoundland and Labrador Teachers’ Association

Teachers throughout the province will be provided with details of the agreement in principle in the coming weeks.

“I am pleased with the work that has gone into reaching this agreement in principle. Our government, together with the NLTA, has secured the teachers’ pension plan for future years. This is another example of this government's commitment to the public service.”
- The Honourable Ross Wiseman, Minister of Finance and President of Treasury Board and Minister Responsible for the Human Resource Secretariat

Founded in 1890, the Newfoundland and Labrador Teachers' Association is a professional organization representing approximately 6,000 teachers in Newfoundland and Labrador.
