Premier and Minister Participate in National Governors Association Winter Meeting

The Honourable Paul Davis, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, was in Washington, D.C. this weekend for the National Governors Association Winter Meeting. Premier Davis represented Canada’s Premiers at the event as the incoming Chair of the Council of the Federation and was joined by the Honourable Derrick Dalley, Minister of Natural Resources.

The meeting provided the opportunity to strengthen existing relationships, explore opportunities for future collaboration, and discuss mutual areas of interest including energy, trade, and employment. On Friday, February 20, Premier Davis addressed the United States Chamber of Commerce. In his speech, Premier Davis, along with National Governors Association Chair John Hickenlooper of Colorado and Conferencia Nacional de Gobernadores Chair Jorge Herrera Caldera of Durango, highlighted the role of Premiers and Governors in promoting North American competitiveness. They also formally announced the North American Governors and Premiers Summit to be held in Colorado Springs, October 30-31, 2015.

Premier Davis and Minister Dalley met with several governors from the New England states to discuss electricity trade issues and plans for the Conference of New England Governors and Eastern Canadian Premiers, which Premier Davis is hosting in St. John’s August 30-31, 2015. Specifically, Premier Davis met with Dannel Malloy, Governor of Connecticut, Paul LePage, Governor of Maine, Maggie Hassan, Governor of New Hampshire and Peter Shumlim, Governor of Vermont. The governors showed a tremendous interest in and awareness of the development of the Lower Churchill Project, and the potential for Newfoundland and Labrador to become a significant participant in the New England energy market. ‎A meeting was also held with the Assistant Secretary for International Affairs at the United States Department of Energy, Jonathan Elkind, to discuss electricity and oil and gas issues.

Premier Davis and Minister Dalley attended a reception at the Canadian Embassy on Friday, February 20. The reception was hosted by His Excellency Gary Doer, Canada’s Ambassador to the United States and his Excellency Eduardo Medina Mora, Mexico’s Ambassador to the United States.

During the visit, Premier Davis met with Maryland Governor Larry Hogan in Annapolis to discuss the implementation of the 2014 Friendship Agreement between Maryland and Newfoundland and Labrador, and opportunities to strengthen ties in culture, heritage, education and trade between the two jurisdictions.

The National Governors Association is the collective voice of the nation’s governors. It is one of the most respected public policy organizations in the United States.
