Premier Davis Celebrates Opening of New Labrador West Health Centre

The new Labrador West Health Centre was officially opened today by the Honourable Paul Davis, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador. The state-of-the-art facility represents an investment of approximately $90 million by the Provincial Government. Premier Davis was joined by the Honourable Steve Kent, Deputy Premier and Minister of Health and Community Services; Nick McGrath, MHA for Labrador West; and Tony Wakeham, President and Chief Executive Officer, Labrador-Grenfell Health, for the announcement.

The 9,500 square metre facility has 14 acute care and 14 long-term care beds, two main operating rooms, diagnostic services including a core laboratory, two X-ray machines, CT scanner, ultrasound and bone density machines, dialysis services and various special function rooms. The health centre will provide access to services including emergency, outpatient, surgical, obstetrical, pediatric, respite, palliative care, physiotherapy, oncology/chemotherapy and mental health and addictions.

The Labrador West Health Centre replaces the Captain William Jackman Memorial Hospital which has been serving the people of Labrador West since 1965.

Since 2004, the Provincial Government has invested over $12.9 million in the Labrador West region for new health care equipment and repairs and renovations to health facilities.

Over the past decade, the Provincial Government has invested nearly $1.5 billion in health care infrastructure in Newfoundland and Labrador. Budget 2014: Shared Prosperity, Fair Society, Balanced Outlook allocated a total investment of over $189 million for health care infrastructure, which includes $119 million for continuing construction and redevelopment, $50.5 million for new equipment and $20 million for repairs and renovations.
