Environmental Assessment Bulletin

The Honourable Perry Trimper, Minister of Environment and Conservation, has announced the following events relative to Part 10 Environmental Assessment of the Environmental Protection Act.

UNDERTAKING REGISTERED:

White Hill Pond Quarry                                                          (Reg 1828)
Proponent: Cabot Ready Mix Limited

The proponent proposes to construct and operate a 9.9 hectare quarry and a 700 metre access road adjacent to existing quarries that are located at the end of Granny Till Road, off Route 60, near Seal Cove. The proposed quarry will be located within the municipal boundary of St. John�s. The operation will consist of excavation and removal of sand and gravel deposits using excavators and loaders, with the material being trucked to the proponent�s concrete plant near the Manuels Bypass Road for crushing and washing. Construction of the quarry is expected to begin in May 2016 and take three weeks to complete. The quarry is expected to operate for approximately five years.

The undertaking was registered on December 14, 2015; the deadline for public comments is January 22, 2016; and the minister�s decision is due by January 28, 2016.

DECISION EXTENDED:

Wabush Mines Decommissioning & Rehabilitation                  (Reg. 1825)
Proponent: Cliffs Natural Resources

The Department of Environment and Conservation and the proponent, Cliffs Natural Resources, have agreed to extend the deadline for public comments to January 14, 2016; and the minister�s decision to January 24, 2016.

Southern Labrador Waste Disposal Facility                            (Reg. 1765)
Proponent: Labrador Straits Waste Disposal Inc.
