Building Modern Learning Communities

Tender Called for New School in Conception Bay South

A tender has been called to begin construction of a new school in Conception Bay South to accommodate students from Kindergarten to Grade 7.

“This government continues to make strategic investments in areas that are important to the people of Newfoundland and Labrador. Our investment in a new school in Conception Bay South addresses population growth in the region and will provide a modern learning environment for students and families. With planning complete, I am pleased to see this project move forward to the next stage of development. Our government continues to focus on strategic investments in education. Through Budget 2014, $109 million was allocated for new schools, extensions and redevelopments - $62 million, or 57 per cent, of that funding was invested to address growth in our school communities.”
- The Honourable Susan Sullivan, Minister of Education and Early Childhood Development

The new school will be a two-story facility expected to accommodate approximately 600 students. It will be constructed on Conception Bay Highway in Conception Bay South and will include 32 classrooms, a gymnasium, library resource centre with IT room, science lab, computer lab, two music rooms, lunch/multipurpose room, and commercial kitchen.

“The addition of this new school will benefit Conception Bay South and the surrounding communities, which are experiencing significant growth with new homes being built and new families calling the area home. Investments in education infrastructure have been hallmarks of our government, with 14 new schools being opened and 27 major extension and renovation projects completed since 2004. We are looking to build on this success with the completion of this new school and the 18 other projects that are underway. These are investments in people that will benefit the communities in which they live.”
- The Honourable David Brazil, Minister of Transportation and Works

The school will be built in accordance with the LEED rating system, which incorporates environmentally-friendly initiatives that enhance both the learning environment and landscape of the entire site. The school will be fully ventilated with air conditioning available in specific locations. A HVAC system is included in the design, as well as energy efficient lighting to maximize LEED credits. Waste reduction, daylighting, and water conservation are among other LEED-influenced design features.

Since 2004, more than $681 million has been allocated for K-12 infrastructure. Fourteen new schools have opened; eight more are in various stages of planning or construction; 27 major extension and renovation projects have been completed, and 10 more are underway.
