Showcasing our Cultural Heritage

Renovations Underway at Historic Garrick Theatre

The Garrick Theatre in Bonavista will see structural improvements that will enhance the visitor experience as a result of a Provincial Government investment of $72,000. The project is being led by the Bonavista Historic Townscape Foundation.

“The Garrick Theatre is a valued part of the landscape and cultural identity of the Bonavista region and our department is pleased to assist with work that will enhance this important venue. This investment, along with more than $1.8 million in contributions to the Foundation by the Provincial Government since 2013, help make Bonavista a premier destination for tourists, and an excellent showcase of our cultural heritage.”
- The Honourable Darin King, Minister of Business, Tourism, Culture and Rural Development

Work on the 200-seat theatre and 2,000 square foot conference room will include structural improvements, increased sound proofing, upgrades to meeting space, and the addition of storage space. Work is expected to be completed in the fall.

“Re-opened in 2010, the Garrick Theater has undergone a complete transformation. This refurbished cinema and live performance venue is an important aspect of our community and a cornerstone of the historic landscape of Bonavista. The Bonavista Historic Townscape Foundation and the Town of Bonavista are doing incredible work and I am pleased to see government support this initiative.”
- Glen Little, MHA for Bonavista South

These enhancements will contribute to the longevity of the building, and help elevate visitor experience. Since 2008, the Provincial Government has contributed more than $600,000 to the Garrick Theatre.

"This investment will improve the Garrick's facilities, allowing it to become more of a multi-purpose venue, something for which there is significant demand. Increasingly the theatre hosts multiple events on the same day, and at the same time. It will now be better equipped for that purpose."
- David Bradley, Chair of Bonavista Historic Townscape Foundation
