Commemorating Our First World War Story

Creating Enduring Legacies Through Honour 100 Grant Projects

The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador has announced the successful projects under the Honour 100 Grant Program, enabling communities and organizations to remember and honour the province’s war heroes and create lasting legacies. The program was launched in May 2014 as part of efforts to highlight the province’s First World War story through the Honour 100 initiative. The Honourable Darin King, Minister of Business, Tourism, Culture and Rural Development, was in France last week to participate in First World War commemorative ceremonies.

“This program is a wonderful way for communities and organizations to take part in the Honour 100 initiative and commemorate the First World War centennial in diverse and meaningful ways. It is a way to identify and honour the men and women who fought for peace and freedom in Europe and at home, and to celebrate their legacies. I look forward to the completion of these creative commemoration projects.”
- The Honourable Darin King, Minister of Business, Tourism, Culture and Rural Development

The Honour 100 Grant Program was created to support arts and heritage projects for the centennial period. The $250,000 grant program supports community-based projects, as well as projects that are province-wide in scope.

Successful projects must meet the following criteria:

  • Demonstrate commemoration of the First World War.
  • Create a legacy of remembrance that reaches beyond the commemoration period.
  • Commemorate an aspect of Newfoundland and Labrador’s role and/or experience in the First World War, including the subsequent effect on the history and people of the province.
  • All projects must have a minimum of 50 per cent contribution from the applicant and community-based projects may be funded up to a maximum of $5,000.

Funding is being provided to 17 organizations in the genres of theatre, music, film, literature and dance. The Provincial Government will invest more than $3 million in the Honour 100 initiative to commemorate Newfoundland and Labrador’s First World War story. A list of groups receiving Honour 100 grants can be found in the backgrounder below.
