Province’s Cultural Heritage Continues to be Celebrated
The Rooms Marks 10th Anniversary with Open House
On June 29, 2005, Newfoundland and Labrador opened the doors to a new era of celebrating our culture and preserving our heritage.
In the decade since The Rooms opened, the people of Newfoundland and Labrador have come to recognize it as an emblem of their passion and pride of place. Visitors have included thousands of school children from across the province, tourists from around the world, British royalty, the Governor General, premiers from every region of Canada, international dignitaries and ambassadors, and of course our nearby friends and neighbours.
Bringing together the Provincial Archives, Art Gallery and Museum created a dynamic and multidisciplinary cultural institution. In the world of art and history, 10 years is not a significant length of time; however, The Rooms has experienced substantial success during those years. Since its opening, The Rooms has presented over 150 museum, visual art and archival exhibitions, and over 1,000 education and public programs that have captured the imagination of nearly 800,000 visitors.
On Sunday, June 28, starting at 12:00 p.m., the public is invited to an old-fashioned kitchen party featuring the band Wabana, along with traditional musicians Bob Taylor, Carl Peters and Larry Foley. Admission is free.
“These past 10 years have been memorable and we would like to thank all those who gave us their vision, hard work and dedication, with a special thank you to our visitors, our biggest supporters. We are proud of what we have accomplished and are excited about what is to come.”
- Dean Brinton, CEO, The Rooms
