Enhancing Tourism Opportunities

Province Invests $1.1 Million in Historic Bonavista

The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador is contributing $1.1 million to the Bonavista Historic Townscape Foundation to complete phase III of the Harbour Front Restoration Initiative, including revitalization of a prime tourist location in the town. The Honourable Darin King, Minister of Business, Tourism, Culture and Rural Development, made the announcement at an event last night in Bonavista.

“As a government, we are proud to support the fine work of the Bonavista Historic Townscape Foundation in revitalizing the harbour front and showcasing our provincial culture and heritage. Such restoration projects not only enhance historic townscapes, but also help create a positive economic impact as more visitors travel to experience our first-class attractions. This investment will continue to inspire further private sector investment in built heritage and business operations as witnessed in Bonavista over the past several years.”
- The Honourable Darin King, Minister of Business, Tourism, Culture, and Rural Development

The foundation has completed two phases of the restoration initiative, including major renovation and redevelopment of streets, historic properties and landscapes along the harbour front area of Bonavista. Phase III continues this work, and will ensure an attractive and pedestrian-safe experience along the entire waterfront. This initiative will leverage an additional $1.3 million, including approximately $248,000 from the foundation and the private sector through Ocean Choice International.

“I am delighted that our government continues to make major investments in rural Newfoundland and Labrador. I would like to congratulate the Bonavista Historic Townscape Foundation on their work in executing their vision for this community. This project will build on the wonderful work already completed in the town, and help ensure a high-quality visitor experience, and a vibrant town centre.”
