Innovation in Ocean Technology Positions Province as Pathway to the Arctic

Province Strengthens International Profile in Arctic Expertise at Major Technology Conference

The Honourable Darin King, Minister of Business Tourism, Culture and Rural Development, is in Copenhagen, Denmark, this week meeting with industry leaders and participating in the 2015 Arctic Technology Conference (ATC). A gathering of global business and academic leaders, ATC provides the opportunity for the industry’s best to come together to share ideas, current research and cutting edge technology. Newfoundland and Labrador will host the conference in 2016.

“With a mature offshore supply and service industry of over 600 companies, all in support of an industry that is operating successfully in our Arctic-like conditions, ATC provides us with a tremendous opportunity to demonstrate the fundamental role our province will play in future Arctic activity. Our government has long recognized Newfoundland and Labrador’s extensive Arctic-related capabilities and expertise. We are pleased to once again participate in this important conference along with a number of Newfoundland and Labrador organizations.”
- The Honourable Darin King, Minister of Business, Tourism, Culture and Rural Development

Founded in 1969, the Offshore Technology Conference (OTC) is the world’s foremost event for the development of offshore resources in the fields of drilling, exploration, production and environmental protection. ATC is built upon OTC’s successful multidisciplinary approach; with 14 technical societies and organizations working together to deliver the world’s most comprehensive Arctic event. ATC draws over 1,000 delegates and approximately 100 exhibitors from around the world. A list of participating organizations and details on the provinces Arctic Opportunities Initiative can be found in the backgrounder below.

Newfoundland and Labrador’s strategic location, world-class infrastructure, and waters colder than anywhere else south of the Arctic Circle, make it the ultimate proving ground for developing cutting-edge solutions to operational challenges in the Arctic.

“We are delighted to host the Arctic Technology Conference in Newfoundland and Labrador. This will be a fabulous opportunity for us to highlight our energy resources and further our global reputation as we network with like-minded professionals and potential investors. As the ideal staging ground for Arctic-related activities, Newfoundland and Labrador is the path to the Arctic, and hosting ATC in 2016 will further establish this position in the international community.”
-The Honourable Derrick Dalley, Minister of Natural Resources

Minister King is leading a delegation of 19 Newfoundland and Labrador firms and organizations including Clarenville-based SubC. One of the province’s leading ocean technology firms, SubC won the Outstanding Incubator Graduate Award from the U.S.-based National Business Incubation Association (NBIA). Out of six possible award categories, SubC Imaging is the only Canadian company to receive an award and was recognized for revenue strength and product innovation. The NBIA Incubation Awards honour organizations that exemplify the best in the industry.
