Harbour Grace Youth Robotics Team to Compete at World Competition

The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador is pleased to support the St. Francis School Robotics Team of Harbour Grace, as the group of eight girls and two boys, Grades 6 to 8, travel to represent the province at World Festival International Robotics Competition in Missouri next month.

This team has been recognized provincially, nationally, and internationally for the success of its projects and its leadership. The St. Francis robotics program is fostering a culture of youth innovation and entrepreneurial spirit in this school and the community, and I am very pleased to support this initiative.
- The Honourable Darin King, Minister of Business, Tourism, Culture and Rural Development

At the provincial competition in December, the team won First Place Overall and an invitation to compete on behalf of the province at the competition in St. Louis, Missouri, in April. The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador will provide $10,900 toward the costs of the trip, with the remaining funding to be supplied through families of the young people and fundraising activities.

In 2014, St. Francis School was one of 32 recipients of funding through the Youth Innovation Projects initiative, which aims to help youth connect with technology-based opportunities that focus on innovation and creative learning. The school received $15,000 for a project on data collection and analysis while studying life cycle of Atlantic salmon.
