Supporting the Development of Communities

Workforce Development Roundtable Discussions Begin in Burin

Today, the Provincial Government held the first of 22 Workforce Development Roundtable Discussions at College of the North Atlantic in Burin. The discussions are a part of the Workforce Development Action Plan under the Population Growth Strategy and will focus on engaging participants on the direction of the strategy. The Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Advanced Education and Skills, attended the first session which heard from stakeholders, employers and community groups. Minister Jackman provided details of coming actions under the strategy.

“Employment opportunities are a key consideration for people when deciding where to live, and whether to stay in the province. The coming actions under the strategy will help provide supports to employers, align early learning, primary and secondary school systems and post-secondary training, and create paid internships, grants and programming to support people in finding work. The information gathered over the coming weeks during these sessions will support the Population Growth Strategy. Our goal is to connect people with solutions through these provincial roundtable discussions.”
- The Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Advanced Education and Skills

A list of roundtable discussions in the month of July can be found in the attached backgrounder. The full list of sessions throughout the province and a discussion guide can be found online at gov.nl.ca/populationgrowth/workforce_roundtables.html. The Workforce Development Action Plan not only supports for major projects and peak employment, but also contains actions to address unemployment and skill shortages, and foster both advanced education and entry-level skills development.

The Provincial Government will embark on a number of actions under the Workforce Development Action Plan including:

  • Creating a labour market forecasting model which enables occupational updates annually, and improving labour market information for youth in K-12, and post-secondary education and training;
  • Providing supports to employers to match labour supply and demand, and create more age-friendly workplaces; and,
  • Aligning early learning, primary and secondary school systems, post-secondary training systems, and adult learning opportunities with the labour market.

These sessions are the first series of Workforce Development Roundtable Discussions. Over the next five years, the Provincial Government will engage the public on labour market priorities to measure success. Information gathered through these discussions will be used to inform program priorities, and a summary of input from the public will be provided in the annual report of the Population Growth Strategy.
