Transportation Upgrades Support Enhanced Accessibility

Tenders Being Called for Wharf Improvements and Ramp Work on Pilley’s Island

A tender for wharf and loading ramp improvement work will soon be called for Pilley’s Island. These upgrades are part of a Budget 2014 investment of $8.5 million for improvements to marine terminals and wharves in Newfoundland and Labrador and will further modernize marine services in the region.

“Vessel replacement and marine infrastructure improvements are key aspects of the Provincial Government’s approach to having a well-developed transportation infrastructure. The upgrades to the Pilley’s Island wharf and loading ramp will ensure that ferry vessels are safely docked and vehicles transition smoothly on and off the ferries.”
- The Honourable Nick McGrath, Minister of Transportation and Works

The MV Hazel McIsaac, which was added to the provincial ferry fleet in 2011, services Pilley’s Island. Work to be completed this year includes the construction of new cribwork and a new cope wall, as well as concrete repairs and the addition of new rubber fenders.

“Last year more than 41,000 passengers and 24,000 vehicles used the Pilley’s Island ferry service. For residents, the upgrades announced today are welcomed and demonstrate the government’s commitment not only to efficient marine transportation, but to rural Newfoundland and Labrador.”
- Ray Hunter, MHA for Grand Falls-Windsor-Green Bay South

Budget 2014: Shared Prosperity, Fair Society, Balanced Outlook supports investments of $8.5 million for improvements to marine terminals and wharves to accommodate new provincial ferries. This is part of the Provincial Government’s Vessel Replacement Strategy.
