Significant Transportation Investments Support Rural Areas

Transportation Upgrades Coming for Bonavista South and Terra Nova

Several highway improvement projects, including the rehabilitation of the Southwest River Bridge, will soon begin in Bonavista South and Terra Nova. These improvements to Newfoundland and Labrador’s transportation infrastructure are part of one of the largest annual investments in road work in the province’s history.

“Our government invests significantly in financial and human resources to maintain a safe and reliable transportation network. In this year’s budget, we allocated $81 million for improvements to provincial roads, highways and bridges. These initiatives will contribute to economic development by encouraging job creation and enabling businesses to take full advantage of a well-developed transportation network.”
- The Honourable Nick McGrath, Minister of Transportation and Works

The tender includes the rehabilitation of a section of Route 238 from Elliston towards Bonavista, a section of Route 235 from Newman’s Cove to Birchy Cove, and a section of Route 230 at Lethbridge.

“This investment in road work will support the region’s economy and tourism industry. Our government is committed to building and strengthening Newfoundland and Labrador’s transportation network, as evidenced by these upgrades.”
- Glen Little, MHA for Bonavista South

Additionally, the tender will include asphalt overlay to sections of Route 233 in Bloomfield and Route 233-10 in Musgravetown and upgrading to Route 310-37-1, Burnside. There will also be stabilization and guiderail replacement on Route 310, Salvage Road, for approximately five kilometres.

“There are a number of priority areas addressed in this year’s Provincial Road Improvement Program. The scope of work will include resurfacing, upgrading and the installation of new reinforced guiderails. I am particularly encouraged to see substantial rehabilitation being undertaken on the South West River Bridge. Residents and the travelling public will benefit from this work.”
- The Honourable Sandy Collins, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation and MHA for Terra Nova

Budget 2014 provides more than $81 million for upgrades and enhancements to the provincial highways, roads and bridges throughout Newfoundland and Labrador. An early tendering approach this year ensures that road work construction will begin earlier than previous years and the full utilization of the construction season.
