Provincial Badminton Tournament This Weekend

Glovertown Academy is the host school for the Provincial Badminton Championships taking place this coming weekend. Ten teams will be competing to determine the team champion.

Each encounter in the team competition will consist of five matches: Girls Singles, Boys Singles, Girls Doubles, Boys Doubles and Mixed Doubles. The first encounter will start at 8:30 a.m. on Friday. Teams are divided into two divisions: Division A will see competition between the host, Glovertown Academy, Baccalieu Collegiate (Old Perlican), St. Lawrence Academy, Jakeman All Grade (Trout River) and William Gillett Academy (Charlottetown). Division B teams include, Jane Collins Academy (Hare Bay), Dorset Collegiate (Pilley’s Island), Belanger Memorial (Doyles), and J. C. Erhardt Memorial (Makkovik) and Queen Elizabeth Regional High (Foxtrap). The semi-finals for the team event are scheduled for 4:30 p.m., with the gold medal encounter taking place at 5:20 p.m.

There is also an individual competition taking place that will feature athletes from the above named schools, along with Cape John Collegiate (LaScie), Canon Richards Memorial (Flower’s Cove), Main River Academy (Pollard’s Point) and Viking Trail Academy (Plum Point). The individual events start at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday and will run all day. All regional coaches will aid in the creation of the individual draws. Each draw will have eight entries, resulting in each event having quarter finals, semi-finals and finals. There is no consolation round - single knock out format.

In addition to the gold and silver School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador team medals, a championship banner will be awarded to the winning team. Gold, silver and bronze medals will be awarded in the individual events. In recognition of the values and principles of sportsmanship, an individual sportsmanship medal will be presented to one deserving person from each team. All teams (coaches and players) will vote to recognize a team who has displayed great sportsmanship as well. This team will be awarded the Team Sportsmanship Banner.

School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador tournaments are made possible, in part, because of the generous support of corporate sponsors. Subway and Dairy Farmers Association/School Milk Foundation are sponsors of School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador.
