Public Advisory: Outdoor Fire Ban Lifted for the Island of Newfoundland

The outdoor fire ban implemented for forest land in all regions on the Island of Newfoundland will end at 6:00 p.m. today (Friday, July 25). Forestry officials with the Department of Natural Resources have determined that current weather and forest conditions warrant lifting the ban. Once the ban is lifted, there will no longer be a restriction on open fires, campfires, the use of outdoor wood burning devices, fireworks, backyard fires including backyard fire pits, and beach fires on Crown forested areas.

The department is asking for the public’s continued cooperation in remaining vigilant with open fires. The forest remains quite dry in many areas - Gander, Gambo and Glenwood in the central region, in particular - and the risk of forest fires is ever present.

The burning of brush requires a permit to burn. Permits can be obtained through District Forest Offices. Contact numbers are available at www.gov.nl.ca/nr/department/contact/forestry/forestry.html.

The Department of Natural Resources encourages residents of Newfoundland and Labrador to be vigilant and exercise caution when in and around forested areas. To report a forest fire, call toll-free 1-866-709-FIRE (3473).
