Strengthening Local Governance for Vibrant Communities

Provincial Consultations on the Provincial-Municipal Fiscal Framework Extended

The Provincial Government is extending the deadline for the Provincial-Municipal Fiscal Framework public consultation process. The new deadline for feedback is June 30, 2014, which will allow residents and organizations more time to prepare written submissions and complete the online survey.

"I am pleased to inform the residents of Newfoundland and Labrador that the review of the Provincial-Municipal Fiscal Framework is progressing and we are now extending the deadline for written submissions and the online survey to June 30, 2014. It is important that we ensure all residents have the opportunity to take part in the review to identify options to improve the way services are delivered, paid for and shared to better position local governments in Newfoundland and Labrador."
- The Honourable Steve Kent, Minister of Municipal and Intergovernmental Affairs

To date, over a dozen consultation sessions have taken place with stakeholders across Newfoundland and Labrador including Municipalities Newfoundland and Labrador, the Professional Municipal Administrators, Rural Secretariat Councils and various Local Service Districts. Officials have also gathered valuable information from across the country to learn how other provinces and territories have structured their fiscal relationships with local governments.

“We have consulted and will continue to consult with residents, businesses and communities during the review process. Extending our deadline for written submissions and participation in the survey will not have an impact on the timelines of the project, and we remain committed to completing this work within a year."
- Minister Kent

The consultation webpage is available at www.miga.gov.nl.ca and provides background information about the fiscal framework. The page also outlines the various ways interested parties can submit their feedback. When all consultations are completed, a “What We Heard Document” will be released on the Department of Municipal and Intergovernmental Affairs’ website.
