Investing in Quality Health Care for Communities and Families

Facilities in Springdale Receive Health Care Funding

The Provincial Government is providing over $870,000 to improve patient care and enhance long-term care services at two health care facilities in Springdale. In addition, a contract has been awarded for the continued development of the new health care facility being constructed in Springdale.

“Our government is committed to ensuring a high quality of life for families, children and senior citizens. All Newfoundlanders and Labradorians should enjoy comfortable and safe settings as they receive essential care. This investment of over $870,000 for health facilities in Springdale builds on our promise to provide accessible and reliable health care services.”
- The Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Health and Community Services

The announcement was made today by Kevin Pollard, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Health and Community Services, at the Valley Vista Senior Citizen’s Home. Mr. Pollard was joined by Rosemarie Goodyear, President and CEO of Central Health for the announcement.

The Valley Vista Senior Citizen’s Home will benefit from $557,000 which will purchase replacement patient beds, adjustable geriatric chairs which reduce sitting pressure and improve the comfort of patients, and specialized tub chairs and bathing systems. This funding will also be used to upgrade sewer lines and to remove an existing stairwell to increase safety and space for residents.

An investment of $313,100 in the Green Bay Health Centre will be used to purchase a new ambulance, two replacement patient beds, chairs, a cardiac monitor, and a weight rack and traction table used for rehabilitation.

“This is an impressive investment in our region’s health care services. The enhancements to these facilities will contribute greatly to the level of comfort, safety and care provided to residents and patients.”
- Kevin Pollard, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Health and Community Services

In addition to the infrastructure investments, a contract for over $390,000 has been awarded to P & B Trucking & Rentals Inc. to advance the development of the new health care facility which will replace the Green Bay Health Care Centre in Springdale. The contract includes water, sewer and storm services for the site, imported fill for the site, and access to the site. It is anticipated that the tender for construction will be issued in spring 2015. Budget 2014: Shared Prosperity, Fair Society, Balanced Outlook provided $2 million to advance the design of the new facility.

“We are very excited to move forward with a new health centre in Springdale. With the contract now awarded we will enter the next phase of the development process. I am also very pleased to see this investment in acute and long-term care. Maintaining quality and safety in the programs and services we provide is our first priority. This investment in equipment, such as beds and geriatric chairs, is very consistent with our commitment to client-centred care."
- Rosemarie Goodyear, President and CEO of Central Health

Since 2004, the Provincial Government has invested nearly $1.5 billion in health care infrastructure. Budget 2014 includes a total investment of over $189 million in infrastructure, which allocates $119 million for continuing construction and redevelopment, $50.5 million for new equipment and $20 million for repairs and renovations.
