Continuing to Enhance Health Care Services

Burin Peninsula Health Care Centre Receives over $1 Million

The Burin Peninsula Health Care Centre will receive over $1 million for the purchase of equipment that supports diagnostic imaging, fetal monitoring, patient care and infrastructure upgrades. The Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Health and Community Services, was joined today by the Honourable Darin King, Minister of Education and MHA for Grand Bank, and Don Keats, Interim President and CEO of Eastern Health, at the centre for the announcement.

The Burin Peninsula Health Care Centre will be provided $744,400 to purchase five patient beds, an ultrasound system for diagnostic imaging, a fetal monitor, two sets of phototherapy lights, a laboratory microscope and 10 medical storage case carts.

The centre will receive $300,000 for the replacement of exterior doors and for electrical upgrades. In addition, a new dedicated landing area will be developed to support helicopter medevac operations.

During today’s event, Minister Jackman also announced that the Provincial Government has engaged Meridian Engineering Inc. as an external consultant to commence the planning and design of a new 12-bed protective care residence in Burin for individuals with mild to moderate dementia. It will be of similar design to the residences currently under construction in Bonavista and Clarenville.

Since 2004, the Provincial Government has invested nearly $1.5 billion in health care infrastructure. Budget 2014: Shared Prosperity, Fair Society, Balanced Outlook includes a total investment of over $189 million in infrastructure, which allocates $119 million for continuing construction and redevelopment, $50.5 million for new equipment and $20 million for repairs and renovations.
