Families and Communities to Benefit from Health Care Infrastructure

$3.3 Million in Health Care Investments for Clarenville Region

Provincial Government investments totalling $3.3 million will strengthen health care facilities and equipment for the residents of Clarenville and the surrounding region. The Honourable Paul Davis, Minister of Health and Community Services, was joined by the Honourable Ross Wiseman, MHA for Trinity North and Speaker for the House of Assembly, and Don Keats, Interim President and CEO of Eastern Health, in Clarenville today to participate in a sod-turning for a new protective care residence. Minister Davis also announced infrastructure funding in support of new equipment for the Dr. G. B Cross Memorial Hospital.

“This investment of more than $3.3 million in new health care infrastructure in Clarenville demonstrates our government’s commitment to ensuring that residents of rural and urban communities have access to quality health care services. The development of health care facilities such as the protective care residence in Clarenville is essential in supporting the health of seniors and families throughout Newfoundland and Labrador, and this new facility will meet the needs of the region for years to come.”
- The Honourable Paul Davis, Minister of Health and Community Services

Funding includes approximately $2.5 million to construct a 12-bed protective care residence, which will accommodate residents with mild to moderate dementia and will be located in close proximity to the hospital. The facility is expected to be completed by spring 2015.

“The new protective care residence and the new, modern equipment for the Dr. G.B. Cross Memorial Hospital will be great assets to the people of our region. These developments will ensure that patients are receiving the best possible care and that health care workers have the most effective tools available to them.”
- The Honourable Ross Wiseman, Speaker for the House of Assembly and MHA for Trinity North

In addition to the new facility, the Dr. G.B. Cross Memorial Hospital will receive $852,000 for new equipment, including a biological safety cabinet, an ultrasound machine, microscope, sterile dryer, ventilator, refrigerator, commercial dryer, and case carts. This investment also includes seven hemodialysis machines for the Coish Place dialysis unit.

“Through these significant investments, Eastern Health will be able to further enhance the quality care we provide to residents in the Clarenville area. Our new protective care residence will ensure that individuals with dementia live in a welcoming, secure, and home-like environment, while funding for new equipment will enrich the range of health care services offered at the Dr. G.B. Cross Memorial Hospital.”
- Don Keats, Interim President and CEO, Eastern Health
