Nominations Invited for Seniors of Distinction Awards

Recognizing the tremendous value and contributions of seniors lies at the heart of the Seniors of Distinction Awards Program. Now in its sixth year, individuals and groups throughout Newfoundland and Labrador once again have the opportunity to nominate a member of their community for this honour.

“Making a positive contribution to your community and our province is not limited by age. Older adults are the cornerstones of our society. They have helped make Newfoundland and Labrador thrive, and their dedication will ensure the province continues to flourish. The Seniors of Distinction Awards is one way in which we can all show our gratitude to the people who continue to help shape the future of our province. I encourage everyone to nominate a deserving senior in your community.”
- The Honourable Susan Sullivan, Minister of Health and Community Services

Eligible nominees for the award must be 50 years of age or older and be a current or past resident of Newfoundland and Labrador. Both voluntary and paid work will be considered, and nominations from last year may be reviewed again this year at the request of the nominator. Posthumous awards may also be given. Up to five Newfoundland and Labrador seniors will be recognized this year.

The nomination form and guidelines for the 2014 Seniors of Distinction Awards are available at www.health.gov.nl.ca, by calling 1-888-494-2266, or by emailing seniorsofdistinction@gov.nl.ca. The deadline for the receipt of nominations is May 23.

The Seniors of Distinction Awards Program supports a priority direction of the Provincial Healthy Aging Policy Framework. Established in 2007, the framework aims to recognize older persons, celebrate diversity, support communities, encourage health and financial well-being, and support employment, education and research.
