Investing in the Future of Seniors, Families and Communities

New St. John’s Long-Term Care Facility Nearing Completion

The new $150 million St. John’s long-term care facility located on Newfoundland Drive is nearing completion and is expected to be open in September of 2014. The Honourable Susan Sullivan, Minister of Health and Community Services, joined with Vickie Kaminski, President and CEO, Eastern Health, for a tour and update of the facility.

“This new facility will have a lasting legacy for the people of this region and on the delivery of long-term care services in the province. Beyond the medical scope, this new facility is about taking care of people’s loved ones and providing them with a home. Residents will benefit from specialized programs and services that are tailored to the levels of care they require. In addition, they will also have access to therapeutic areas like gardens, gathering rooms and spaces for families and loved ones.”
- The Honourable Susan Sullivan, Minister of Health and Community Services

The new facility will accommodate approximately 460 beds and include space for recreation therapy, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and spirituality. The facility will also contain protective care units for individuals with dementia; dedicated beds for bariatric care; enhanced short stay services such as respite and convalescence care; and, specialized behavioural services for seniors.

“The new long-term care facility is a large and very modern facility that will provide both a high quality of life for our residents and an improved working environment for our employees. With the facility currently in the final stages of development, our commitment is to transition residents and staff to the new location with as little disruption as possible.”
- Vickie Kaminski, President and CEO, Eastern Health

The facility consists of two residential buildings connected by links to a centre building that houses the main entrance, clinical space, cafeteria and the facility’s main kitchen.

The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador is committed to supporting important social programs, strong communities and the health and well-being of children, families and seniors.
