Building Age-Friendly Communities to Support Seniors

Applications Invited for Age-Friendly Provincial Grants Program

The Provincial Government is inviting municipalities, Aboriginal governments, and seniors’ organizations to submit applications for initiatives that support healthy aging through the annual Age-Friendly Newfoundland and Labrador Grants Program. This program, which has $200,000 available for investment, reflects the Provincial Government’s commitment to encourage older adults to be fully involved in their communities.

“Bringing together community and municipal partners to advance local and regional initiatives that support older adults to age actively, enjoy good health, and remain involved in their communities are integral elements of creating age-friendly communities. Since the program’s launch in 2010, 30 municipalities and 61 seniors’ organizations and retiree groups have received funding to assess the age-friendliness of their communities. There has always been great interest in this program and I fully expect this to continue through this year’s call for applications.”

The Age-Friendly Newfoundland and Labrador Grants Program supports initiatives which benefit older adults, such as six-week educational programs on physical education, affordable healthy shopping and cooking, as well as programs where older adults share traditional skills with school-aged individuals.

• The Provincial Government is inviting municipalities, Aboriginal governments, and seniors’ organizations to submit applications for initiatives that support the development of age-friendly communities through the annual Age-Friendly Newfoundland and Labrador Grants Program.
• The Age-Friendly Newfoundland and Labrador Grants Program provides a total of $200,000 each year to selected groups to support the development of age-friendly communities.
• Since its launch in 2010, the Age-Friendly Newfoundland and Labrador Grants program has supported 91 communities and seniors’ groups through a total investment of $730,000.
• The Age-Friendly Newfoundland and Labrador Grants Program is an initiative of the Provincial Healthy Aging Policy Framework. Applicants must ensure proposed projects align with one or more of the priorities outlined in the framework, which include recognition of older persons, celebrating diversity, supportive communities, financial well-being, health and well-being and employment, and education and research.
• The deadline for applications for the grants program is February 28, 2014.
