Supporting the Health and Well-Being of Residents

Flu Vaccine Protects Against Influenza

Flu season is underway and across Canada there have been a number of confirmed cases of influenza with the predominant strain being H1N1. In Newfoundland and Labrador, there have been 36 reported cases of influenza this year, half of which have been of the H1N1 strain. This is to be expected as H1N1 has become part of the normal flu.

“Seasonal influenza is circulating across Canada, including this province. This year’s flu vaccine, which is still available, helps protect individuals from three strains of flu, including H1N1. In addition to receiving the annual flu shot, practising the simple rule of clean, cover and contain is recommended to help prevent the spread of influenza. Individuals should remember to thoroughly wash their hands, cover coughs and sneezes, and to stay home when sick.”
- The Honourable Susan Sullivan, Minister of Health and Community Services

At the same time last year there were 179 laboratory confirmed cases of influenza as compared to the 36 so far this year. It is expected that there will be more cases of influenza reported in the weeks ahead.

“Currently, information does not indicate any increase in the number of influenza cases or severity of cases over last year in Newfoundland and Labrador. However, children, the elderly, and all individuals with chronic illnesses are always more at risk of complications from influenza. For more information on immunization or other health concerns, individuals should contact their primary health provider.”
- Dr. Faith Stratton, Chief Medical Officer of Health

In fall 2013, 130,000 doses of the flu vaccine were distributed to family physicians and public health offices throughout the province and are still available for individuals to receive. Dialogue with the regional health authorities is ongoing to evaluate uptake and ensure that the appropriate supply is available. Communication is also ongoing among Medical Officers of Health throughout Canada, as well as the Public Health Agency of Canada.

The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador is committed to supporting important social programs, strong communities and the health and well-being of children, families and seniors.
