New Health Care Infrastructure Enhancing Services in All Regions
Ensuring access to modern and new health care facilities and equipment
continues to be a priority for the Provincial Government. This is
demonstrated by the more than 30 health care infrastructure projects that
have been completed or are under development in all regions of the province
over the past 10 years, including 12 anticipated to be completed in 2014.
“Since 2004, our government has invested more than $1.2 billion to enhance
health care infrastructure through new facilities, upgrades and repairs to
current buildings and for new equipment. Currently there are 20 projects
ongoing throughout Newfoundland and Labrador with 12 of these expected to be
completed and open in 2014. The investments we have made in health
infrastructure will ensure that families in rural and urban communities
continue to have access to top-quality health care services.”
- The Honourable Susan Sullivan, Minister of Health and Community Services
Over the past year, three projects were completed in the communities of
Lewisporte, Glovertown and Corner Brook:
- North Haven Manor, a 51-bed long term care facility and 12-bed protective
community residence, was opened in Lewisporte;
- The new Dr. C. V. Smith Memorial Community Health Centre opened in
Glovertown; and,
- The 14-bed restorative care unit in the Corner Brook long-term care facility
recently began offering rehabilitation programs.
During 2014, it is anticipated that 12 more projects will be completed:
- The youth treatment centres for addictions in Grand Falls-Windsor and
complex mental health needs in Paradise;
- The St. John’s long-term care facility and protective community residences
in Bonavista and Clarenville;
- The Faculty of Medicine expansion and Genetics Research Centre in St.
John’s;
- The St. Clare’s emergency department redevelopment;
- Five state-of-the-art operating rooms in the Central Newfoundland Regional
Health Centre in Grand Falls-Windsor; and,
- The Labrador West Health Centre, Marystown North Clinic on the Burin
Peninsula, and Strait of Belle Isle Health Centre in Flower’s Cove.
The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador is committed to supporting
important social programs, strong communities and the health and well-being
of children, families and seniors.
