Local Music Industry Contributing to a Vibrant Economy

Premier Congratulates Recipients of the 2014 MusicNL Awards

Corner Brook was booming with local musical talent, outstanding performances and industry leaders this past weekend, as the city played host to the 22nd Annual MusicNL Awards Gala. The Honourable Paul Davis, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, and the Honourable Darin King, Minister of Business, Tourism, Culture and Rural Development, presented awards at the gala last night (Sunday, October 26). The gala was the finale to a week of workshops, roundtables, songwriters’ circles and other activities dedicated to musical artists in Newfoundland and Labrador.

“The musical talent that exists throughout Newfoundland and Labrador, with both established and emerging artists, is just incredible. I want to take this opportunity to congratulate all the 2014 MusicNL Award winners and nominees on their tremendous accomplishments. I would also like to recognize again the late Mattis Benoit. I had the great pleasure of presenting Mr. Benoit’s Lifetime Achievement Award to his son. He is a true legend within the Newfoundland and Labrador music industry and his music will inspire many generations to come.”
- The Honourable Paul Davis, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador

The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador supports MusicNL through $350,000 annually. Since the launch of Creative Newfoundland and Labrador: The Blueprint for Development and Investment in Culture in 2006, the Provincial Government has invested $87 million to promote culture and heritage throughout the province.

“The province’s music sector is such an important contributor to the cultural environment across our province. Recognizing the remarkable musical ability that exists throughout Newfoundland and Labrador plays a large part in fostering the talent and creativity that makes this province such a vibrant place to live, work and raise a family. The Provincial Government is proud to support MusicNL as it continues to play a significant role in the further development of our cultural economy.”
- The Honourable Darin King, Minister of Business, Tourism, Culture and Rural Development
