Cultural Industries Continue to Promote Province’s Identity

Province Pleased to Support Republic of Doyle from the Beginning Through to a Sixth and Final Season

Since its debut in 2010, the CBC television series Republic of Doyle, filmed exclusively in Newfoundland and Labrador, has experienced record-breaking ratings and positive reviews. The Honourable Paul Davis, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, and the Honourable Darin King, Minister of Business, Tourism, Culture and Rural Development, attended the season premiere last night at the St. John’s Convention Centre. This is the show’s sixth and final season.

Republic of Doyle has been a tremendous success and a marvellous vehicle for representing the province; it is truly something of which every Newfoundlander and Labradorian should be very proud. Our government is pleased to have supported the show from the beginning. With the sixth season about to begin, the show has a fantastic track record, producing 77 episodes and now airing in 97 countries the world over. Our investment in this show has supported the continued enhancement of the film and television industries in our province, while providing a significant economic benefit.”
- The Honourable Paul Davis, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador

Since its inception, the Provincial Government has made a total equity investment of approximately $16.6 million and a tax credit of approximately $18 million in the Republic of Doyle production. This resulted in total production activity of approximately $128 million.

Republic of Doyle has truly cemented Newfoundland and Labrador’s reputation as a desired location for film and television production. For all six of its seasons, Republic of Doyle has been produced and written right here in Newfoundland and Labrador, which has led to substantial opportunities for talent development within the province, all of which positively impact the local economy. For every dollar invested by the province in the show, almost three dollars in production activity was created and more than 1,600 fulltime employment equivalencies were created."
- The Honourable Darin King, Minister of Business, Tourism, Culture and Rural Development

Across the nation and in Newfoundland and Labrador, the film and television production industry has been an engine of job creation. Nationally, its record of job creation has outpaced that of the overall economy and several related industries. Overall, the Canadian film and television industry was valued at $5.82 billion in 2013 and resulted in 127,000 full time jobs, and since 1997, when the Newfoundland and Labrador Film Development Corporation was created, the total production activity in the province has been $291 million and has leveraged over $235 million in new investments.
