Environmental Assessment Bulletin
The Honourable Joan Shea, Minister of Environment and
Conservation, has announced the following events relative to Part 10
Environmental Assessment of the Environmental Protection Act.
UNDERTAKING REGISTERED:
St. John’s Aquaponics Project
(Reg. 1747)
Proponent: Lester Farms Inc.
The proponent proposes to construct and operate an aquaponics facility at
Pearltown Road in St. John’s whereby Tilapia fish will be raised onsite and
the effluent water will be used to grow vegetables. The project will test
the feasibility of commercial aquaponics production under the Newfoundland
climate with the aim to market both the greenhouse produce and fish. The
facility will include the construction of a pre-engineered wooden header
house and pre-engineered greenhouse. Construction of the facility and
assembly of the aquaponics system is expected to take approximately five
months to complete.
The undertaking was registered on February 19, 2014; the deadline for public
comments is March 28, 2014; and the Minister’s decision is due April 5,
2014.
ENVIRONMENTAL PREVIEW REPORT SUBMITTED:
Big Triangle Pond Mineral Exploration Access Road
(Reg 1725)
Proponent: Eagleridge International Ltd.
The proponent has submitted an Environmental Preview Report (EPR) for the
above undertaking. The EPR was required to provide additional information
including, but not limited to, a complete description of the planned mineral
exploration activities and justification for the construction of the
proposed road to carry out those activities. Guidelines for the preparation
of the EPR were issued to the proponent on January 23, 2014. Public comments
regarding the EPR are welcome and must be received no later than March 28,
2014. The document can be viewed on the department’s website indicated
below. The Minister will decide the acceptability of the EPR and a decision
is due by April 7, 2014. For further information on this project contact the
