Meeting the Challenges of 21st Century Learning

Education Ministers Discuss Challenges, Priorities in Charlottetown, P.E.I.

Education ministers from throughout Canada gathered in Charlottetown, P.E.I., this week (July 7-9) to discuss strategies to improve student achievement, increase the profile of international education, support teaching excellence, and other issues of common interest, during the 103rd meeting of the Council of Ministers of Education, Canada (CMEC).

“CMEC meetings provide an opportunity for education ministers to discuss common concerns, but also to explore innovative means to address the challenges we all face. All jurisdictions, for example, are looking to improve student achievement in the area of numeracy, and it is important to share ideas and best practices – what is working, and what is not – in an effort to boost our provincial and national achievement levels.”
- The Honourable Darin King, Minister of Education

Minister King is also joining the Honourable Kevin O’Brien, Minister of Advanced Education and Skills, today (Thursday, July 10) at the Skills for the Future symposium in Charlottetown, co-hosted by provincial and territorial education and labour ministers. The symposium will be followed by a meeting of the Forum of Labour Market Ministers on Friday, July 11. Discussions will focus on issues affecting the labour market, both nationally and within individual provinces.

“I am looking forward to discussing both the challenges and positive steps taken for labour market development and skills training across our country, especially considering the strong job outlook being experienced in our province. Specifically, I will be discussing the restriction on temporary foreign workers in low-wage sectors, which will be acutely felt in areas with high levels of economic activity in our province where employers may be challenged to recruit locally.”
- The Honourable Kevin O’Brien, Minister of Advanced Education and Skills
